Dallas Asian American Film Festival Sells Out Ahead of Dallas Museum of Art Debut
The inaugural Dallas Asian American Film Festival has sold out before its first screening, signaling strong local interest in independent cinema and stories rooted in Asian American Texan experiences. The festival will debut Saturday at the Dallas Museum of Art, organized by the Dallas Asian American Art Collective. The program includes 10 short films and one feature, director Tadashi Nakamura’s documentary “Third Act.” About 70% of the lineup was made by Texas filmmakers, while half of the selected films come from North Texas creators. The festival was curated to include South, Southeast, East and West Asian American perspectives, with an all-Asian American leadership team based in North Texas. Several Dallas-area artists will present work at the event. Dallas director Huzaifa Ejaz will screen “Phir Milain Gey,” about three elderly sisters waiting in purgatory to reunite with a younger sibling. Uday Narayanan’s “The Criminal” is a comic satire involving an indestructible 2007 Honda Civic and the U.S. government. Arab American director Kais Marz will show “Marsupial,” while Korean American artist and University of Texas at Dallas professor Laura Hyunjhee Kim will present the experimental mixed-media film “Sky’s Edge.” The festival also includes a free public video workshop led by Pegasus Media Project at the Crow Museum of Asian Art, for which tickets remain available. For Dallas, the sold-out debut highlights demand for locally made, diverse films and offers a new platform for North Texas artists. Its focus on Asian American filmmakers distinguishes it from the Asian Film Festival of Dallas, which primarily presents international Asian cinema.
