Havana Marks 30 Years on Vancouver’s Commercial Drive
Havana Vancouver, a long-running restaurant on Commercial Drive, is marking its 30th anniversary in September. Located at 1212 Commercial Drive, the restaurant opened in 1996 and has grown alongside one of Vancouver’s best-known dining and entertainment districts. A new feature by Robert Lawrence Vancouver focuses on Havana’s longevity, shifting attention from the city’s frequent restaurant openings to an established neighbourhood business. The restaurant combines Latin-inspired cooking with Pacific Northwest influences and says it emphasizes fresh, local ingredients. Its menu includes shareable plates, tacos, sandwiches, seafood, larger entrées and weekend brunch. The Cubano, made with house porchetta, honey ham, Swiss cheese, dill pickles and yellow mustard on a pressed Cuban bun, remains one of its signature dishes. Other selections include avocado tostones, Pacific snapper ceviche, carnitas tacos, paella, Salt Spring Island mussels with chorizo, and mahi mahi with habanero coconut curry. Havana’s year-round patio and colourful dining room are also central to its identity on Commercial Drive. For the anniversary month, it is offering three $30 specials: a Cubano with a margarita or sangria, a taco combination with a margarita or sangria, and an anniversary sangria pitcher.
