The opening of Huntley Street Recreation Centre in Alexandria completes seven major sports facilities built across Green Square and Sydney’s city south in seven years. The City of Sydney has invested more than $230 million in the precinct. All seven venues are within two kilometres of Green Square station. The centre occupies a former industrial warehouse. It has four indoor multipurpose courts, three rooms for hire, outdoor practice courts, a dedicated fitness space and spectator seating. The accessible building has rooftop solar panels, natural light and ventilation, and a rainwater collection and reuse system. Other venues include Perry Park Recreation Centre and Sportsfield, Getiela Sportsfield, Gunyama Park Aquatic and Recreation Centre, Gunyama Park Sportsfield, and a community court at Green Square Public School. Together, the facilities provide indoor courts, all-weather playing fields and swimming facilities for residents, schools, clubs and other users. Lord Mayor Clover Moore said the facilities followed more than 20 years of planning and were partly funded by developer contributions from Green Square’s redevelopment. Green Square and city south currently have about 48,000 residents, with 65,000 projected by 2046. The City of Sydney is also planning a sports precinct at Mandible Street. Construction and opening of the proposed $78 million facility are expected within five years.
