Best Things to Do in New York City This Week, August 17–23
New York offers a wide range of cultural, food and outdoor events during the week of August 17–23. One of the city’s largest free summer programs, NYC Summer Streets, concludes on August 22, when sections of Brooklyn’s Eastern Parkway and the Bronx’s Grand Concourse will become car-free corridors. The program offers space for walking, running, cycling and skating, alongside activities, performances, fitness classes and art installations. Theater and nightlife are also prominent this week. “Titanique,” a campy musical spoof of James Cameron’s 1997 film built around Celine Dion songs, is now on Broadway after more than 1,000 Off Broadway performances. Meanwhile, GMHC’s Latex Ball 2026 takes place at Terminal 5 on August 22, featuring fetish fashion, DJs, performances and a free reservation-based event with limited capacity. Food and pop culture fans have several options. Savor the Islands brings Caribbean food, drinks and music to Industry City in Brooklyn, with dishes including Jamaican jerk, Guyanese pepperpot, and Trinidadian curry and roti. Anime NYC returns to the Javits Center for four days of panels, cosplay, screenings, Japanese food and live music. Nerdlesque NYC’s “Anime After Dark” will combine cosplay, comedy and neo-burlesque at the Laurie Beechman Theatre on August 21 and 22. For a quieter cultural outing, the group exhibition “Elsewhere” is on view at VillageOneArt in Chelsea, featuring work by five artists exploring peace, play and observation. This lineup is useful for New Yorkers because it highlights events across several boroughs and formats, from free public street programming to theater, galleries, food and fan culture.
