Los Angeles Social Impact Sports Summit Brings Athletes and Philanthropy Together
Athletes, coaches and nonprofit leaders met at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles on October 6 for the Social Impact Fund’s inaugural Social Impact Summit Sport. Powered by Nike, it was the fifth event in the fund’s summit series and its first focused on sports and philanthropy. Conversations about athletes’ influence beyond competition centered on youth sports, including girls’ participation, access to quality coaching and young athletes’ well-being. Jimmy Kim, general manager of the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, said he wanted every child in the city to have equitable access to recreation, regardless of neighborhood, gender or circumstances. Los Angeles native and former NBA All-Star Baron Davis attended to hear from people working in sports and philanthropy. Dallas Wings guard Azzi Fudd described her foundation’s efforts to create opportunities for children through basketball, education, health and wellness. Former Angel City FC captain and four-time Olympian Ali Riley led a panel and spoke about giving back to the sport that shaped her life. The Social Impact Fund connects public figures with support for charitable initiatives; since 2014, it has facilitated more than $135 million in giving across more than 80 organizations.
