Los Angeles City Council Seeks Report on World Cup Watch Parties Ahead of 2028 Olympics
The Los Angeles City Council voted 13-0 Tuesday to request a review of city-supported World Cup watch parties and fan festivals ahead of the 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The motion, introduced by Councilmembers Monica Rodriguez and Eunisses Hernandez, seeks an account of how the events were planned and carried out and what could be improved. City officials and the Department of Recreation and Parks must provide attendance estimates, event locations and a list of participating departments. The review will cover public safety, crowd and traffic management, accessibility for visitors with disabilities, multilingual communications and community feedback. It will also examine local business activity, permitting, city costs and reimbursements, and coordination for future large gatherings. In a separate 13-0 vote, the council directed the city’s chief administrative officer to prepare expenditure instructions related to the Youth Sport Partnership Agreement. It also asked Recreation and Parks to examine possible subsidies that would allow the PlayLA youth sports partnership to continue after the 2028 Games. The council also requested an update within 60 days on planning for the LA28 Cultural Olympiad. Rodriguez’s motion calls for programming that reflects Los Angeles’ cultural and artistic diversity and gives neighborhoods across the city opportunities to participate, including those beyond competition venues and major tourist destinations.
