Los Angeles Initiative Honors Historic Latino Businesses in Boyle Heights

Los Angeles is honoring three longtime Boyle Heights businesses through HistoricPlaceLA Revealed: Latino Los Angeles. The citywide initiative highlights places that have shaped the city’s Latino history and culture. Historical markers will be installed on lampposts outside designated sites, including The Paramount LA, Candelas Guitars and El 7 Mares. The Paramount LA opened in 1924, and its ballroom has hosted performers including Stevie Wonder and Celia Cruz. Owner Frank Acevedo said the recognition underscores the value of historic places for tourism and neighborhood pride. City Councilmember Ysabel Jurado, who represents District 14, said the initiative aims to make the account of Los Angeles history more inclusive by drawing attention to local Latino contributions. Candelas Guitars is a family-owned shop that owner Tomas Delgado said has operated for almost 100 years. El 7 Mares, a Mexican seafood restaurant, has brought people together through food for decades. Judy Carolina Diaz, whose parents opened the restaurant, described its marker as an acknowledgment of her father’s sacrifices for his family and the Boyle Heights community. The city plans to unveil markers at 140 sites across Los Angeles, each with a QR code linking to photographs, information and stories about the place.
