Ryan Walsh on Houston Sports Events, Economic Impact and Growth Strategy
Houston’s 2026 sports calendar is bringing coordination, hospitality and operational planning into sharp focus for the Harris County–Houston Sports Authority, CEO Ryan Walsh said. Ahead of the World Cup, the city is preparing for the World Baseball Classic, NCAA tournament games, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo, Astros opening day and other home events. Walsh said the authority is working to deliver safe, smooth and memorable visitor experiences while reinforcing Houston’s standing as a global sports destination. That work depends on alignment among public safety agencies, METRO, Houston First, venue operators, teams and other stakeholders, with logistics, communications, transportation and responsibilities mapped clearly across each event. Planning is underway with NRG Stadium and its partners for the World Cup, Daikin Park and the Astros for the World Baseball Classic, and Toyota Center and the host institution for NCAA tournament play. Each venue carries its own staffing and operating demands, Walsh said, while fans expect dependable security, entry procedures, signage, services and event-day experiences. Local companies can register through the Buy Houston – By Houston vendor program to receive procurement notices tied to major events, including opportunities involving food and beverage, equipment rentals, temporary infrastructure and other services. Since 2019, events brought to Houston by the authority have generated about $1.2 billion in economic impact; the World Cup alone was projected to generate roughly $1.5 billion, and the broader sports calendar could bring the region close to $2 billion in annual sports-event impact.
