Best Things to Do in Sydney This Weekend
Sydney has a packed weekend ahead, led by the Sydney Marathon on Sunday. Thousands of runners from around the world are expected to take over the city for the event, while spectators can also find shake-out runs and celebrations linked to the race. In Chippendale, Plate It Forward will mark one million donated meals with a free laneway party from 12pm on Sunday. The group behind Colombo Social, Kyiv Social and Kabul Social plans a barbecue led by Sydney chefs, Young Henrys beers and music. Meanwhile, the Sydney Cherry Blossom Festival continues at Auburn Botanic Gardens, where visitors can see more than 200 cherry blossom trees in bloom and join Japanese-inspired activities, food stalls, workshops and performances. It is also the final weekend of the Festival of Dangerous Ideas, which runs until August 30 with talks, films, art and excursions across 14 venues. The programme includes international speakers and sessions examining politics, culture, communities and identity. In Marrickville, more than 50 Australian artists are presenting garden-inspired ceramics, sculptures, paintings and textiles at The Garden, open from 10am to 4pm on both days. For indoor entertainment, Sydney audiences can catch theatre including *Pride & Prejudice* (*sort of*) at the Opera House, while the city also offers cafés, restaurants, bars, picnic areas, walks and Sunday roasts. The weekend matters for Sydney because it highlights the city’s mix of major sporting events, community initiatives, cultural debate and seasonal outdoor experiences across several neighbourhoods.
