Alameda Hobbies and Community Events: Mahjong, Pottery, Yoga and More
From clay and crochet to singing, dancing and shoreline exploration, Alameda’s community calendar is packed with beginner-friendly ways to try something new and meet neighbors. Several activities are coming up in the next few days, while local groups are also urging residents to reserve spots early for classes that tend to fill quickly. Alameda Pots, at 1517 Webster Street, offers six-week courses year-round in Handbuilding, Intro to Wheelthrowing and Advanced Beginner Wheelthrowing. Owner Dave Thomson opened the studio in 2024 while searching for summer activities for his three children. Described as Alameda’s only pottery shop open to the general public, the studio regularly sees classes fill well ahead of their start dates. Its latest session began August 18, and the next session has yet to be announced. Alameda Walks will offer a free guided walk around Crab Cove on September 12. The 2.5- to 3-mile route begins at 9 a.m. at the Doug Siden Visitor Center, led by naturalist Michael Charnofsky and CASA guest Lauren Eisele. Participants will hear about the shoreline’s natural and land-use history, along with its resilience as ocean levels rise. Coven of Stitches will host a beginning crochet class on September 13, while yoga and dancing aboard the USS Hornet are planned for that evening. Alameda Sings! holds an open house on September 14. The Alameda Mahjong Social Club’s Mid-Autumn Festival gathering follows on September 19 at Alameda Brewing, where advance tickets are encouraged.
