Madrid Hosts 55,000 Events a Year, Aims to Remain a Leading International Capital

Madrid hosts around 55,000 events each year, generating more than €5.6 billion for the city, according to figures presented at a meeting organised by the city council and Nebrija University. Shakira concerts, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the Fruit Attraction trade fair and a Formula 1 race were cited as examples of the city’s international reach. City officials and event organisers discussed how Madrid attracts congresses, performances and major international gatherings, and how it can sustain that activity. They identified public transport, infrastructure, specialist workers and cooperation between public authorities and businesses as key factors. José Herrera, the city council’s director-general for international relations, said Madrid receives 72% of the foreign capital entering Spain. Speakers said visitors who once left after a conference are increasingly extending their stays. Organisers cited an official NFL game that drew about 90,000 spectators. Figures presented at the meeting put visitors’ average stay at four days and their average spending at €470. Participants argued that assessments of events should account for what remains in the city after they end, alongside attendance and immediate spending. The discussion also examined Pope Leo XIV’s June 2026 visit as a test of Madrid’s organising capacity. Around 1.2 million people attended the Mass at Cibeles, according to figures shared at the meeting, and approximately 17,000 professionals worked across different locations on the main day.
