London Aims to Become a Global Esports and Gaming Hub

London is seeking a bigger place in global esports and competitive gaming. Mayor Sadiq Khan wants the city to host major events and help more people build careers in the industry. Gaming generates nearly $12 billion for the UK economy and employs more than 73,000 people nationwide. Chester King, president of the Esports Federation, says London’s record of hosting cultural and sporting events makes it a natural venue for esports. He also points to uses for gaming in defence, cybersecurity and drones. A military esports tournament in October is expected to bring together 10 countries. At London’s University Campus of Esports, head of undergraduate studies Nathan David says students use their interest in games to develop communication, teamwork and the ability to work under pressure. Khan has also highlighted gaming cafés and youth clubs as places where young people can access esports and technology. A City Hall-commissioned report, “London’s Esports Opportunity,” outlines ambitions for high-profile competitions and grassroots participation. New Meta London co-owner Zharion Henry Mitchell says the venue is expanding its lower-tier esports and community events. His focus, particularly after Covid, is on bringing players together in person to play, meet and communicate.
