30 Things to Do in London This Weekend (October 17–18)

Film premieres and Halloween trails sit alongside photography and ballet in London over the weekend of October 17–18. The BFI London Film Festival is in its final full week, with premieres, restored films, talks and virtual-reality experiences at venues across the capital. Many major premieres are sold out, though available seats and returned tickets may still be found. The festival also has a drop-in games lounge and a free DJ night at the BFI. At Tate Modern, a new exhibition traces the emergence of art photography from the 1880s to the 1960s through work from around the world. The Photographers’ Gallery turns to William Eggleston’s images of American diners, suburban streets and homes. Its exhibition marks 50 years since the publication of *William Eggleston’s Guide*. Ballet Black celebrates its 25th anniversary at Sadler’s Wells with a double bill pairing the Olivier Award-winning *Ingoma*, inspired by a South African miners’ strike, with the UK premiere of Hope Boykin’s *…all towards hope*. In Mayfair, Trèsind offers an inventive Indian tasting menu priced at £138. For Halloween, Rooftop Film Club is hosting horror screenings, while Kew Gardens has an illuminated trail with installations, performers and actors. Kew’s twilight sessions run from 6pm to 7.30pm, with darker moonlight sessions beginning after 7.30pm.
