Swimmers Return to the Chicago River | Open House Chicago's 2026 Sites | Mary Cassatt's Lost Chicago
Chicago’s fall cultural calendar includes a major Art Institute exhibition on Mary Cassatt, its first extensive examination of the artist in more than 25 years. “Mary Cassatt: After Impressionism” brings together 70 paintings, pastels and prints, including material connected to the mural Cassatt completed for the 1893 World’s Fair. The museum has also drawn Kokandy Productions’ cast of “Sunday in the Park With George,” whose performers visited Seurat’s painting in gallery 240 before staging the Sondheim musical. On the University of Chicago campus, the Renaissance Society will present the American debut of Karimah Ashadu’s “MUSCLE,” a moving-image installation about bodybuilders training in Lagos, Nigeria. The School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s fall Visiting Artists Program, meanwhile, will host talks by photographer Catherine Opie, curator Hamza Walker, architect Ronald Rael, writer McKenzie Wark and print artist Amos Paul Kennedy Jr. The Chicago Architecture Center has announced more than 200 locations across 30 neighborhoods for the sixteenth Open House Chicago, scheduled for October 17-18. First-time sites include the Blackhawks Ice Center, the Cadillac Palace Theatre, the Muddy Waters Mojo Museum, the Sears Sunken Garden and the Woman’s Athletic Club of Chicago. Chicago preservation projects also feature among the 2026 Richard H. Driehaus Foundation Preservation Award winners. They include the adaptive reuse of the former Robert Emmet Elementary School as the Aspire Center for Workforce Innovation, the Little Village Arch Restoration Project and the Muddy Waters Mojo Museum; the recipients will be honored at a public ceremony in Chicago on November 6.
