Chicago Culture: Jacobs-Jenkins Play, New Restaurants and Chicago International 2026
A new West Town art space and a major design benefit are arriving on Chicago’s fall cultural calendar. Hana Pietri will open The Living Room on the second floor of 350 North Ogden with an inaugural exhibition of work by Marvin Tate. The opening is set for Friday, October 2, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The organization grew from a Chicago artists’ club formed after French American artist Tiphanie Spencer attended a 2011 discussion on how the city could better support artists. The Design Museum of Chicago will host its annual gala, “Forward: Designing the Next Chapter,” on Thursday, October 8 at Secrist | Beach. The event will be the first benefit under executive director David Salkin. The museum presents the gala as part of its effort to broaden its role as an accessible civic platform for engaging with design. Architecture and preservation remain part of the local conversation. In Evanston, Chase is seeking to demolish a forty-seven-year-old modernist branch designed by the late David Haid, who studied under Mies van der Rohe at Illinois Institute of Technology and worked in Mies’ Chicago office. Critic Lee Bey argues for preserving the brick-and-glass building. In the West Loop, a penthouse redesigned for Suzanne and Bassel El-Moursi draws from their Egyptian and Syrian roots, with designer Sarah Kuchar-Parkinson using desert neutrals and jewel tones inspired by Cairo and Damascus after the couple requested no white walls.
