TN Agri Budget: Govt bets on AI, Machine Learning to deliver real-time assistance to farmers
The Tamil Nadu government has launched an innovative initiative called the 'Uzhavar AI scheme' as part of its Agriculture Budget for 2026-27. This program aims to leverage Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to provide real-time, data-driven assistance to farmers throughout the state. With an allocation of ₹2 crore, the scheme will deliver comprehensive technical advisories via mobile devices, covering the entire crop cycle from sowing to harvest. Farmers will receive localized weather forecasts, soil health management tips, alerts for pest outbreaks, and tailored crop recommendations based on current agro-climatic conditions. To enhance accessibility for rural farmers, the government is introducing 'Voice-First Agriculture Services.' This feature allows farmers to access vital agricultural information and market intelligence through voice queries on their mobile phones, bridging the gap between technology and traditional farming practices. The initiative signifies a shift from subsistence farming to a more technology-driven model focused on farmer prosperity. Additionally, the budget includes provisions for Soil Health Cards for approximately three lakh farmers, along with investments in physical infrastructure to support technology dissemination. Eight new Integrated Agricultural Extension Centres will be established, providing a one-stop facility for technical advisories and modern farming practices. The government emphasizes that timely information is crucial for agricultural success, aiming to ensure fairness and efficiency in scheme implementation through data-driven tools.
