No suicides in 3 years: How IIT-Madras put students first

IIT Madras has made significant strides in prioritizing student mental health, particularly after facing a tragic series of suicides in 2023. In response, the administration implemented a comprehensive wellness program that emphasizes collective responsibility among students, faculty, and parents. With professional counselors now available 24/7 on campus, students can access support whenever needed, fostering a culture where mental health is openly discussed and addressed. The institute has also introduced innovative measures to enhance student well-being. Each faculty member is assigned a small group of students to mentor, ensuring regular check-ins that help identify those who may need additional support. Furthermore, the number of counselors has increased dramatically, and outreach efforts have expanded beyond the wellness center to various campus locations, reducing the stigma associated with seeking help. Flexibility in academic programs has also been a key focus. By reducing mandatory classroom hours and allowing students to engage in recreational courses, IIT Madras aims to create a more balanced and less stressful environment. These initiatives, coupled with a commitment to swift responses for vulnerable students, have contributed to a significant improvement in the overall mental health landscape at the institute, with no reported suicides since April 2023.
