IIT Madras hosts national workshop on student wellness with Education Ministry

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) recently hosted a two-day national workshop focused on enhancing student wellness in higher education. Held on July 12 and 13, 2026, the event, titled "Celebrating Minds: From Academic Excellence to Sustainable Wellness," attracted over 200 faculty members and student support professionals from institutions across South India. This initiative, part of the Ministry of Education's Malaviya Mission Teacher Training Programme, aims to bolster student wellbeing mechanisms nationwide. A significant highlight of the workshop was IIT Madras's recent achievement of the ISO 45001:2018 certification for its Wellness Centre, marking it as the first Centrally Funded Technical Institute in India to receive this recognition. This certification underscores the institute's commitment to occupational health and safety management, as well as its holistic approach to campus wellbeing. Rina Sonowal Kouli from the Ministry of Education emphasized the importance of such programs, noting that they have reached over 3,000 faculty members since January 2024. The workshop featured a variety of sessions, including lectures and panel discussions on topics like stress management and preventive mental health strategies. Participants were introduced to the IIT Madras Student Wellbeing Model, which encompasses mentoring systems, peer support networks, and early identification of distress. The event concluded with recommendations aimed at enhancing mentoring and counselling frameworks across higher education institutions, reinforcing the importance of emotional resilience alongside academic achievement.
