Climate Denial Didn’t Disappear. It Moved From The Diagnosis To The Treatment

Denial is a common psychological response when faced with distressing realities, such as terminal illness or, in this case, the climate crisis. Research indicates that as the climate worsens, political leaders often retreat from necessary action, despite acknowledging the science behind climate change. For instance, during a severe heatwave in Europe in 2026, countries like Poland and France recorded unprecedented temperatures, leading to thousands of excess deaths. Surprisingly, instead of accelerating climate policies, many governments rolled back existing measures, illustrating a troubling trend of denial regarding the treatment of climate issues. This phenomenon can be understood through the lens of psychological defense mechanisms. Just as cancer patients may misjudge their prognosis due to denial, governments may accept the diagnosis of climate change while refusing to implement effective solutions. This implicatory denial allows them to acknowledge the facts without feeling compelled to act, creating a cycle of inaction that hinders progress. Interestingly, living through climate disasters does not automatically translate into increased support for climate action. A study revealed that individuals who experienced extreme weather were more likely to support climate policies only if they attributed the events to climate change. This suggests that awareness and acknowledgment of the implications of climate change are crucial for fostering proactive responses in daily living and lifestyle choices.
