Austin, Texas, Offers Year-Round Travel With Festivals, Food and Culture

Austin’s visitor calendar stretches across much of the year, with events devoted to sport, technology, film, food and nature as well as live music. In February, the Austin Marathon takes thousands of runners through city neighborhoods, past live bands and spectators. South by Southwest (SXSW) follows in March, drawing artists, entrepreneurs, media and visitors to conferences, film premieres, performances and professional gatherings that extend beyond official venues. Spring brings the Austin Food + Wine Festival, with tastings and cooking demonstrations led by chefs and producers. Its dining scene ranges from Texas barbecue to contemporary restaurants, international influences, cocktails and local ingredients; visitors can also explore restaurants and markets across the city’s neighborhoods. In October, Austin City Limits Music Festival fills Zilker Park for two weekends, pairing international acts and emerging performers with food from local restaurants and a view of the city skyline. Accommodation demand rises substantially during the festival, making early booking advisable. Bat Fest, Austin’s most unusual seasonal gathering, takes place in August or September at the Congress Avenue Bridge. Music, food and activities lead up to dusk, when a colony of Mexican free-tailed bats emerges from beneath the bridge and flies over Lady Bird Lake.
