26 Things to Do in Chicago, Oct. 22–28: Art, Opera and Live Music

Suburban mothers trying to persuade a school board to ban controversial library books are at the center of “Adirondack Chair Circle,” Stephanie Alison Walker’s world-premiere play at Steppenwolf Theatre. Caroline Neff stars in the production, which runs through Dec. 6. It is among Chicago’s theater, opera, dance and live music offerings for Oct. 22–28. Lyric Opera presents the Pulitzer Prize-winning “Omar” from Oct. 23–28. It tells the true story of Omar ibn Said, an enslaved Islamic scholar whose memoir became an act of survival and resistance. “The Book of Mormon” runs at the Cadillac Palace Theatre through Nov. 1, while Babes With Blades’ “King Lear” runs at Theater Wit through Nov. 21. At Open Space Arts, *Before We Are History* brings together works by queer writers from the early days of the AIDS epidemic, with performances from Oct. 23–Nov. 8. Winifred Haun & Dancers bring two world premieres, “The Middle of Forever” and “Traces from Before,” to the Ruth Page Center for the Arts on Oct. 24 and 25. The program also reprises “Trashed,” Haun’s collaboration with circus artist Emma Serjeant. The Buena Vista Orchestra plays the Vic Theatre on Oct. 22, and the Tedeschi Trucks Band has a four-night residency at the Chicago Theatre. The Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians launches its Ubuntu Festival with three evenings of performances from Oct. 22–24. On Oct. 26, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago opens its monthly season at the South Shore Cultural Center with a program that includes Beethoven’s “Eroica.” Tickets are pay-what-you-can, starting at $5.
