Zero Waste seeks textile recycling in new drive
Türkiye's Zero Waste initiative is making significant strides in promoting textile sustainability through a new circular economy project. By installing clothing donation bins at state-run postal and cargo centers across the country, the initiative aims to collect unwanted garments, redistributing wearable clothing to those in need while recycling unusable textiles into new products. This effort reflects a commitment to reducing waste and fostering a more sustainable approach to resource management. Launched in 2017 under the leadership of First Lady Emine Erdoğan, the Zero Waste initiative focuses on preventing waste generation and promoting efficient resource use. Samed Ağırbaş, President of the Zero Waste Foundation, emphasizes the importance of this project, stating that it not only addresses textile waste but also creates a social circular economy. By collaborating with participating companies, the initiative ensures that recycled materials can lead to the production of new clothing, which is then distributed to individuals in need. The process begins with the collection of textiles at PTT branches, where items are registered and sorted based on their condition and suitability. Usable garments undergo a disinfection process before being distributed through social assistance programs, while those deemed unsuitable are recycled. This comprehensive approach not only addresses immediate needs but also contributes to a more sustainable future by promoting responsible consumption and waste management practices.
