Volkswagen confirms weighing up to 50,000 more job cuts

Volkswagen is facing a challenging period, with CEO Oliver Blume revealing plans for potentially cutting an additional 50,000 jobs. This announcement comes as part of a broader strategy to reduce the workforce by a total of 100,000 positions globally. The company is grappling with various pressures, including U.S. tariffs, shrinking profit margins from electric vehicle production, and fierce competition from Chinese automakers who are increasingly exporting to Europe. In an internal memo, Blume emphasized the urgent need for the company to become more efficient and cost-effective. He pointed out that Volkswagen's operational costs are approximately 20 percent higher than those of its competitors, necessitating significant overhead reductions. With staff costs accounting for a substantial portion of these expenses, the potential job cuts could have a profound impact on the workforce, particularly in Germany, where 50,000 jobs are already being eliminated. The scale of these cuts would mark a historic restructuring within the global automotive industry, surpassing the significant layoffs experienced by General Motors in 2009. Additionally, Blume raised concerns about the future viability of several German factories, indicating that their ability to operate competitively into the next decade remains uncertain.
