Türkiye’s libraries enter record-breaking new era
Turkey's libraries are experiencing an unprecedented transformation, marking a significant milestone in their service to the public. With a staggering 39.2 million visitors and 7.2 million members, the library system has expanded its physical footprint to nearly 900,000 square meters, a remarkable increase from 320,000 square meters just eight years ago. This growth reflects the government's commitment to enhancing access to library services, particularly for children and young people. The newly inaugurated Şırnak Provincial Public Library exemplifies this evolution, boasting a capacity for 1,475 users and shelving for nearly 62,000 books. It features dedicated sections for various age groups, including infants and preschoolers, as well as facilities for individuals with disabilities. The library is designed not just as a space for reading but as a vibrant cultural center that hosts workshops, conferences, and artistic activities. Minister of Culture and Tourism Mehmet Nuri Ersoy emphasized that libraries are evolving into hubs of innovation and entrepreneurship. With over 1,300 libraries across Turkey, the focus is on creating productive environments that foster social, cultural, and economic development. The integration of digital tools and mobile services further enhances accessibility, ensuring that libraries remain vital resources for all citizens.
