Tamil Nadu Budget 2026: Government bets big on AI for education, governance and industrial growth
The Tamil Nadu government, under Finance Minister N. Marie Wilson, has unveiled its inaugural budget, placing a strong emphasis on Artificial Intelligence (AI) as a cornerstone for future development. The budget outlines ambitious plans to establish an AI and innovation city named ‘Arivagam,’ which aims to foster collaboration among AI companies, startups, and research institutions. This city will feature an AI university, a skill development center, and innovation incubators, all designed to enhance the state’s AI ecosystem. In addition to infrastructure, the budget allocates ₹398 crore to the Artificial Intelligence, Information Technology, and Digital Services Department, highlighting the government's commitment to integrating AI into various sectors. A significant focus is placed on education, with the launch of the AI Industry Development Program, which will develop specialized curricula for higher education. Furthermore, the Tamil Nadu School Programme for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics will expand to an additional 2,600 government schools, enhancing technological literacy among students. The government is also introducing a new trade in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning in Industrial Training Institutes, aiming to train 24,000 students over five years. These initiatives, alongside digital governance reforms, are expected to significantly boost the state's economic growth and technological advancement.
