Spacious rural garden makes smooth transition to urban space
Relocating a beloved garden can be a daunting task, especially when moving from a spacious rural property to a more compact urban space. Sandra Gessner Eggertson faced this challenge when she sold her three-acre home near St. Andrews and moved to a quieter street in Winnipeg. With hundreds of cherished perennials, including hostas and specialty irises, she spent three months carefully transplanting her plants into pots with the help of a friend. These plants were then wintered at her friend's farm, ensuring their survival until spring. Once settled in her new home, Eggertson transformed her front yard by removing existing grass and creating sweeping curved beds. With a mix of soil and a river of granite boulders, her garden began to take shape. By the end of July, it blossomed into a vibrant display of colors, earning the designation of an official Historic Iris Preservation Society display garden. Eggertson cultivates various irises and lilies, each blooming at different times, creating a dynamic visual experience throughout the growing season. Her garden not only showcases her passion for these beautiful plants but also reflects the connections she has built with fellow gardening enthusiasts over the years. Through shared knowledge and plant exchanges, Eggertson has created a unique garden that delights both her and her neighbors.
