Korean craft, clothing take center stage as Busan welcomes UNESCO officials
Busan is currently hosting a vibrant celebration of Korean craftsmanship and fashion, coinciding with the 48th UNESCO World Heritage Committee meeting. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has organized two significant exhibitions at Shinsegae Centum City, aimed at showcasing the beauty of Korean craft and the traditional hanbok. The "Invitation to Korean Craft" exhibition runs until July 30 and features 149 works from 29 talented artists, highlighting both traditional and contemporary interpretations of Korean aesthetics. Among the featured artists, Lee Jeong-hoon offers a unique take on traditional architecture through sculptural stools, while Kwon Jung-mo's hanji lighting reflects the intricate latticework of Korean homes. The exhibition not only emphasizes the artistry involved in ceramics, textiles, and lacquerware but also illustrates how these handcrafted pieces can seamlessly integrate into everyday life. A pop-up marketplace allows visitors to purchase works from local artists, enhancing the cultural experience. The Hanbok Fair complements this celebration by presenting eight brands, including popular local names, offering over 100 hanbok garments and accessories at significant discounts. Visitors can engage in hands-on experiences such as trying on hanbok and learning about traditional wedding attire. These events provide a wonderful opportunity for international attendees to appreciate the rich cultural heritage of Korea through its crafts and traditional clothing.
