India is set to launch its first Hydrogen Fuel Cell Train on July 17, marking a significant step towards cleaner transportation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the train on the Jind–Sonipat route in Haryana, showcasing the country's commitment to sustainable transport solutions. This innovative train generates its own electricity using hydrogen, eliminating the need for overhead electric wires or diesel engines. As a result, it produces only water vapor and heat as by-products, contributing to a greener environment. The train features ten coaches, including eight passenger coaches and two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars, accommodating approximately 2,600 passengers. This makes it one of the largest hydrogen-powered passenger trains globally. Initially, it will operate at a maximum speed of 75 km/h, with a design capability of reaching 110 km/h. The Jind–Sonipat route has been chosen to demonstrate the train's operational viability and safety under regular conditions. Safety is a top priority, with advanced features such as hydrogen leak detectors and continuous monitoring systems in place. The hydrogen is produced through electrolysis at a dedicated facility in Jind, ensuring a reliable supply. As India embarks on this hydrogen journey, the project is expected to pave the way for future hydrogen-powered trains across the country, enhancing the railway network's sustainability.
