India’s First Hydrogen Powered Passenger Train Launched As PM Modi Flags Off Service On Jind-Sonipat Route
In a significant step towards sustainable transportation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated India's first hydrogen-powered passenger train on May 12, 2023. This groundbreaking service, which operates on the 89-kilometer Jind-Sonipat route in Haryana, marks a pivotal shift from diesel reliance to zero-emission transport. The train, developed by the Integral Coach Factory in Chennai, generates electricity onboard using hydrogen, emitting only water vapor as a byproduct. At the core of this innovative train is a Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell, which combines hydrogen stored in onboard cylinders with oxygen from the air to produce electricity. This process eliminates combustion and tailpipe emissions, showcasing a clean and efficient mode of rail transport. The trainset consists of two Hydrogen Driving Power Cars and eight Trailer Coaches, capable of reaching speeds of up to 75 km/h. India's hydrogen train stands out globally, as it is designed for high-capacity operations, accommodating approximately 2,600 passengers. To support this initiative, Indian Railways has established the country's largest hydrogen refueling facility at Jind, ensuring a sustainable supply of fuel. With safety measures rigorously implemented and certifications obtained, this project not only highlights India's commitment to green technology but also sets the stage for future hydrogen train developments across the nation.
