India's edible oil imports to surge July-October as supplies shrink before festivals
India is poised to see a significant increase in edible oil imports from July to October, as domestic supplies dwindle ahead of the festive season. The slowdown in local soybean and rapeseed crushing operations has prompted refiners to actively seek palm and soybean oil to meet the heightened demand. This surge in imports is expected to average around 1.5 million tons per month during this period, according to industry officials. The festive season in India, which spans from August to November, typically drives up the demand for edible oils. As local production struggles to keep pace with consumption, imports are becoming essential. India, the world's largest buyer of vegetable oils, relies heavily on imports to satisfy nearly two-thirds of its edible oil needs. This year, total imports are projected to rise to 16.3 million metric tons, up from 16 million tons the previous year. In response to the anticipated demand, refiners are not only increasing purchases from traditional suppliers like Indonesia and Malaysia but are also diversifying their sources. This includes palm oil from South America and Africa, as well as soybean oil from countries such as China and Turkey. As the festive season approaches, these strategic moves will help ensure that the market remains stable and well-supplied.
