
India launches first hydrogen-powered train, experts see niche role in rail network

India has recently inaugurated its first hydrogen-powered train, marking a significant step towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels in the railway sector. This initiative, celebrated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, aims to transition towards cleaner energy sources, although experts suggest that hydrogen trains may only serve a niche role in the broader context of India's already electrified rail network. The hydrogen train operates on a 89-kilometer route from Jind to Sonipat, powered by a 1,200-kilowatt hydrogen fuel cell system. This innovative technology generates electricity by combining hydrogen with oxygen, producing only water vapor as a byproduct. As a clean fuel, hydrogen offers a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuels, contributing to lower greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector. However, the long-term viability of hydrogen trains hinges on the availability of affordable green hydrogen, produced from renewable energy sources. While hydrogen has potential, experts emphasize the need for a robust infrastructure and a focus on green hydrogen production to maximize its environmental benefits. Given that over 95% of India's broad-gauge railway network is already electrified, hydrogen trains are likely to complement existing systems rather than replace them entirely, highlighting the complexity of transitioning to sustainable energy solutions.
