HDFC Bank trims workforce by over 3,300 in FY26, says tech will elevate, not replace people

HDFC Bank, India's largest private sector lender, has made significant changes to its workforce, reducing it by 3,343 employees during the financial year 2026. This decision aligns with the bank's strategic shift towards automation and technology integration, as highlighted by Managing Director and CEO Sashidhar Jagdishan. He emphasized that the goal is not to replace human roles but to enhance the overall employee experience through technology, particularly in customer-facing positions. The bank's annual report reveals a decline in total employee strength, which fell to 211,178 from 214,521 the previous year. Notably, the reduction affected non-supervisory roles, with a significant drop in clerical and subordinate staff. Despite this overall decrease, HDFC Bank has increased its middle and junior management positions, indicating a shift towards higher-value roles that focus on customer engagement and advisory services. As the banking sector increasingly embraces artificial intelligence and automation, HDFC Bank aims to streamline operations while redirecting talent to meet evolving customer needs. This transformation reflects a broader trend in the industry, where technology is reshaping job functions and enhancing productivity. Ultimately, HDFC Bank's approach underscores the importance of adaptability in a rapidly changing financial landscape.
