Gaurang Shah’s ‘Limitless Traditions’ chronicles India’s handloom heritage
Gaurang Shah’s coffee table book, "Limitless Traditions," offers a profound exploration of India's rich handloom heritage, reflecting on the intricate relationship between tradition and innovation. During its launch in Hyderabad, Shah shared a poignant conversation with a weaver from Benares, who emphasized that the craft is not about starting anew but continuing a legacy that has endured for centuries. This insight prompted Shah to view himself as a catalyst in preserving these age-old traditions. The book intertwines Shah’s personal journey with the diverse weaving techniques found across India. It begins with a historical overview of Indian textiles, before delving into Shah's experiences and the evolution of his craft. His passion for weaving was ignited at a young age, influenced by the women in his family and his early work in his father's matching center. Today, he collaborates with over 7,000 weavers across 16 states, revitalizing communities and providing sustainable livelihoods. "Limitless Traditions" not only showcases stunning photographs of handwoven saris but also highlights innovative design experiments, such as combining khadi with Patola borders. Through this book, Shah and writer Shefali Vaidya invite readers to appreciate the artistry and dedication behind India's textile heritage, fostering a deeper connection to the craft.
