In a significant move to support local entrepreneurs, the Zambian government has begun distributing K10 million to 2,300 traders affected by a devastating fire at Chiwempala market. The inferno, which occurred last November, resulted in the destruction of various goods worth millions of Kwacha, prompting President Hakainde Hichilema to pledge financial assistance to help these traders recover and restart their businesses. Chingola District Commissioner Howard Kamwandi announced that the distribution process has commenced, with affected traders receiving amounts ranging from K2,500 to K40,000 based on their individual losses. This targeted approach aims to ensure that the funds are allocated fairly and transparently, providing a much-needed lifeline to those who have suffered significant setbacks. While the compensation may not fully cover the losses incurred, it serves as a crucial starting point for the traders to rebuild their livelihoods. Mr. Kamwandi expressed gratitude for the patience shown by the traders during the wait for these funds and emphasized the importance of using the money wisely.
