Chandigarh University Student Develops E-Commerce Platform to Promote Heritage Products of Indian Artisans

Tanish Sharma, an MBA Digital Marketing student at Chandigarh University, has launched an innovative e-commerce platform called 'The Banjara'. This initiative aims to connect traditional artisans from across India with modern consumers, promoting the rich heritage of Indian craftsmanship. Inspired by Prime Minister Modi's 'Vocal for Local' initiative, The Banjara features over 250 products from more than 40 artisans representing 18 states, showcasing a diverse array of traditional crafts, from Phulkari textiles to intricate Madhubani paintings. The platform not only serves as a marketplace but also as a means to empower artisans by ensuring they receive fair compensation for their work. Tanish recognized the disparity between artisans and urban consumers, prompting him to create a direct connection that eliminates middlemen. By doing so, The Banjara supports sustainable livelihoods and the preservation of traditional art forms, allowing customers to actively participate in India's cultural preservation. Chandigarh University has played a pivotal role in Tanish's entrepreneurial journey, equipping him with essential skills in digital marketing. The university fosters a culture of entrepreneurship, providing students with practical experiences and industry insights. As The Banjara continues to grow, it aims to expand its reach internationally, further celebrating India's artistic legacy while ensuring artisans thrive in the modern marketplace.
