AI could unlock $228 billion in annual value for US AEC sector by 2030: McKinsey

Artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize the architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) sector, potentially unlocking an impressive $228 billion in annual value for the United States by 2030. A recent McKinsey report highlights that the European construction sector could also see significant benefits, with an estimated impact of around $126 billion. This transformation comes at a crucial time, as the AEC industry grapples with stagnant labor productivity, which has only increased by 10 percent since 2000, starkly contrasting with the 90 percent rise in manufacturing. The report emphasizes that AI could automate a substantial portion of nonphysical work within the AEC sector, with projections indicating that up to 50 percent of such tasks in architecture and engineering, and 39 percent in construction, could be automated. This shift could lead to enhanced efficiency and profitability for companies that leverage proprietary project data and optimize workflows. As AI technologies become more integrated into business processes, the sector is expected to undergo significant changes. In the near term, companies can streamline knowledge work, while in the medium term, they can transform project data into reusable assets. Ultimately, AI is anticipated to create a more automated operating system that integrates design, planning, and execution, paving the way for a more efficient future in architecture and construction.
