
Hydrogen Bus Begins Service in Madrid, Offering Over 1,000km Range on a Single Tank

Since June, Madrid has been home to an innovative hydrogen-powered bus that is redefining public transport in the city. This bus, equipped with Bosch's advanced fuel-cell technology, can travel over 1,000 kilometers on a single tank of hydrogen and refuels in just 10 to 15 minutes. As part of a real-world trial, it aims to demonstrate the potential of hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles for long-distance and high-frequency bus services, showcasing a clean alternative to conventional battery-electric buses. The bus, manufactured by Irizar and operated by Alsa, has undergone rigorous testing and received necessary regulatory approvals before entering regular passenger service. The pilot project strategically focuses on routes where the bus's impressive range can highlight the benefits of hydrogen technology. Bosch emphasizes that fuel cells are particularly advantageous for buses that cover long distances daily, as they face challenges in charging during their routes. This trial is a significant step in proving that hydrogen fuel-cell technology is ready for widespread use in public transport. With the European Union's stringent emissions regulations on the horizon, the introduction of hydrogen buses is timely. By 2030, EU rules mandate a 90% reduction in carbon emissions from newly registered city buses compared to 2019 levels. Hydrogen fuel-cell buses are classified as zero-emission vehicles, making them a vital option for transport operators looking to transition away from diesel-powered fleets. The growing market for cleaner transport technologies is evident, with over 38,000 new buses registered across the EU in 2025. Beyond the bus initiative, Bosch is expanding its hydrogen technology portfolio, focusing on hydrogen production, refueling infrastructure, and fuel-cell systems for various vehicles. The Madrid trial is expected to yield valuable insights into the reliability and efficiency of hydrogen-powered public transport, paving the way for a greener future in urban mobility.
