Chirag Veer Singh Sarao Makes History as First Sikh American at U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs
Chirag Veer Singh Sarao has made history by becoming the first ‘keshdhari’ Sikh American to join the U.S. Air Force Academy (USAFA) in Colorado Springs. This significant milestone highlights the growing diversity within the U.S. military and the Academy's commitment to inclusivity. A ‘keshdhari’ Sikh adheres to the practice of maintaining unshorn hair and beard as a fundamental aspect of their faith. Sarao's journey to the Academy began with his appointment on April 4, and he received a crucial ‘religious accommodation’ on June 20, allowing him to serve while honoring his beliefs. On June 24, Sarao officially joined the USAF Academy during In-Processing Day, where he began a rigorous six-week boot camp. His acceptance into the Academy is a testament to his impressive academic achievements and leadership skills. Prior to this, he had been awarded full scholarships from both the Air Force Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and the Naval ROTC, showcasing his dedication to serving his country. Sarao's background is equally remarkable. He has maintained a strong academic record, achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, and holds a second-degree black belt in Taekwondo. Additionally, he was an active member of his school's varsity water polo team, demonstrating his commitment to both academics and athletics. The U.S. Air Force Academy, located in the picturesque setting of Colorado Springs, is one of the five federal service academies in the United States. It offers a unique blend of undergraduate education, military training, and leadership development, preparing graduates to become second lieutenants in the U.S. Air Force or the U.S. Space Force.
