18-Year-Old Colorado Springs Student Moves into House Built by Classmates Over 3 Years
Eighteen-year-old Victoria Turner has achieved a remarkable milestone by living in a house she helped build over three years as part of her high school education. Enrolled in Liberty High School’s building and construction program in Colorado Springs, Turner and nearly 100 classmates worked on a 1,200-square-foot modular home, gaining hands-on experience under the guidance of skilled tradespeople. Turner, who has been passionate about construction since childhood, applied to the program with the hope of turning her dream into reality. The project, which typically takes about two years, extended to three due to instructor turnover and the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite graduating in May 2023 before the house was completed, Turner remained optimistic. She humorously suggested to her friends that it would be amusing if her mother ended up buying the house, not realizing that her mother was genuinely interested in supporting the program. The proceeds from the sale would directly benefit future projects, making the purchase even more meaningful. In December 2023, Turner was presented with the keys to her new home during a ceremony at Liberty High School. The house was relocated to her parents' property, where she now lives with her twin sister. This experience has not only provided her with a place to call home but has also equipped her with valuable skills. Graduating with OSHA certifications, Turner quickly secured a job at a local roofing company, where she often finds herself as the only woman on the job site. Turner views her role in the construction industry as a pathway to inspire change. She believes that increasing female representation in trades can positively impact the workforce and society as a whole. Her father highlights the importance of programs like the one at District 20, which offer practical opportunities for students who may not pursue traditional college paths. For Turner, the benefits are immediate; she enjoys the comfort of knowing her home inside and out, a unique advantage for any homeowner.
