Matt Weston Receives Honorary Degree from University of Kent in Canterbury

Olympic champion Matt Weston has recently been honored with an honorary degree from the University of Kent during graduation ceremonies held in Canterbury. The 29-year-old skeleton racer, who achieved gold at the Milan Cortina Winter Games, received a Doctor of the University degree, marking a significant milestone in his career. Weston, originally from Crowborough in East Sussex, expressed his gratitude for the recognition, describing the past few months since his Olympic success as a "whirlwind." Weston’s journey to Olympic glory is remarkable. He became the first British Winter Olympian to win two medals at the same games, securing gold in both solo and team events alongside his partner, Tabitha Stoecker. This achievement came after a challenging performance in Beijing 2022, where he finished 15th. The University of Kent awards such honorary degrees to individuals who have made exceptional contributions across various fields, including sports and community service. For Weston, receiving this honor felt surreal, especially given the extraordinary experiences he has had since his victory, such as meeting notable figures like former Liverpool FC manager Jürgen Klopp. In addition to celebrating his achievements, Weston shared insights into his personal challenges, including a recent hip operation, which was his second surgery following a shoulder injury that affected his Olympic performance. He humorously noted that he postponed his hip surgery to avoid being on crutches during his wedding. Looking ahead, Weston is focused on returning to racing and laying the groundwork for the next four years of his athletic career. The graduation ceremony also honored other notable individuals, including Matt Green, known as The Rapping Science Teacher, and charity founder Maya Amangeldiyeva. The event highlighted the university's commitment to recognizing excellence in various fields, making it a memorable occasion in Canterbury.
