JD(S) Leader Arrested for Assaulting Traffic Constable in Bangalore
JD(S) state general secretary Manjunath, also known as Gottigere Manjanna, has been arrested in Bengaluru over the alleged assault of a traffic police constable on duty. The incident reportedly took place on Sunday at around 4pm near the Hulimavu traffic police station in Gottigere. Police said constable Arun was regulating traffic when he stopped Manjanna’s vehicle with a hand signal, allowing vehicles from the opposite direction to pass. According to the complaint, Manjanna objected to being stopped and questioned the constable, leading to an argument. He is alleged to have grabbed Arun by the collar and tried to assault him with the help of an aide. A video that later went viral purportedly shows Manjanna speaking to a senior police officer by phone and attempting to kick the constable. Police said Manjanna called a senior officer after the altercation to complain that his vehicle had been stopped. The constable was later allegedly asked to apologise to Manjanna, which reportedly upset junior police personnel. Members of the public and Hulimavu traffic police intervened and separated the men. The matter came to the department’s attention after Arun had gone home, after which he was called back for an inquiry. A case was registered at Hulimavu police station, and police invoked provisions relating to assault or criminal force intended to deter a public servant from performing duty, along with other applicable sections. The case is relevant to Bengaluru because traffic officers manage daily road movement across busy neighbourhoods such as Gottigere and Hulimavu. It also highlights the importance of protecting personnel while they carry out traffic enforcement duties.
