Bangalore Draft Rules May Double Parking Fees on Major Commercial Roads
Bengaluru could see substantially higher parking charges on some of its busiest commercial roads if the Karnataka government notifies the draft Greater Bengaluru Authority (Parking) Rules, 2026. The rules, published on August 11, would require city corporations to classify roads into three categories. Type A roads, defined as commercial stretches attracting visitors from across the city, would face the highest fees. Locations that could fall into this category include M.G. Road, Brigade Road, Kalyan Nagar Main Road, Sampige Road, Lavelle Road, Koramangala Main Road, and Indiranagar’s 80 Feet and 100 Feet roads. Under the proposed structure, parking for both two-wheelers and cars on Type A roads would cost ₹40 per hour. In off-street facilities, two-wheelers would be charged ₹20 per hour and four-wheelers ₹40 per hour. Current rates on several roads that would qualify as Type A are ₹15 per hour for two-wheelers and ₹30 for cars. The proposal could particularly affect employees in central Bengaluru, where many offices lack parking space and workers depend on on-street parking. People involved in preparing the policy say higher charges are intended to reduce on-street parking on arterial and sub-arterial roads. The expectation is that shifting demand towards off-street parking could help improve commute times, although central Bengaluru has limited land available for creating such facilities. For Bengaluru, the draft is relevant because it could change the daily cost of driving to major commercial areas while also shaping how road space is used. Its impact will be especially important for commuters until public transport and off-street parking options expand.
