Nationwide Blackout Hits Accra as Multiple Power Plants Fail, Disrupting Services
A significant fault in Ghana's national power grid has led to widespread blackouts, affecting the capital city of Accra, the commercial hub of Kumasi, and many northern regions of the country. The outages began early Wednesday morning when several power plants were forced to shut down. The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has assured the public that their engineers and system operators are working diligently to restore power safely and as quickly as possible. This recent blackout highlights the ongoing issue of power shortages in Ghana, commonly referred to as "dumsor," which translates to "on and off" in the Akan language. While the situation has seen improvements in recent years, the current outages have left homes, businesses, and essential services in the dark. Many commuters faced challenges getting to work, particularly those whose phones were uncharged and unable to facilitate transport payments or ride-hailing services like Uber. Small businesses and individuals relying on digital services have also been significantly impacted, although larger institutions like hospitals typically have backup generators to mitigate the effects. GRIDCo is currently conducting a thorough technical investigation to identify the cause of the outage, but they have not provided a timeline for when normal electricity supplies will resume. Ghana, known for being one of the largest producers of gold and cocoa globally, has been working to diversify its energy sources. In recent years, the country has incorporated gas into its electricity generation to meet the growing demand from an increasingly urbanized population. Despite these efforts, the electricity sector remains susceptible to transmission failures and interruptions in fuel supply, primarily due to the aging infrastructure of hydropower plants that have suffered from years of inadequate maintenance.
