64 Funnycars Transition from Ryvals to Power Pop with a Unique Twist in Vancouver

Vancouver's vibrant music scene has been shaped by numerous collaborations, and one of the most enduring is between Tim Chan and Eric Lowe. Currently performing together in the bands 64 Funnycars and Asian Persuasion All Stars, their musical journey began in the early 1980s with a punk band called the Ryvals. Formed during high school in Victoria, this band not only marked the beginning of their musical careers but also highlighted their shared experiences as Chinese-Canadians in an overwhelmingly white environment. Their friendship blossomed through music, transcending cultural backgrounds to create a lasting bond. The Ryvals gained recognition in the local punk scene, performing alongside notable bands such as Nomeansno and Infamous Scientists. Their first significant gig in January 1982 showcased the burgeoning punk culture in Victoria, and despite their youth, they captivated the audience with their energetic performances. As their sound evolved, they began to incorporate influences from post-punk bands, which can be heard in their later works. However, the band's journey was short-lived, as Lowe moved to Vancouver for school, effectively ending the Ryvals. After a brief hiatus, Chan and Lowe reunited with new members to form 64 Funnycars. This new venture allowed them to explore their musical identities further while maintaining their punk roots. Their upcoming performance at the Fox Theatre to celebrate the re-release of their debut album, "Happy Go Lucky," serves as a reminder of their enduring legacy in Vancouver's music scene. The duo's commitment to addressing cultural issues through their art continues with projects like Asian Persuasion All Stars, which aims to combat racism and promote inclusivity. In essence, the story of Tim Chan and Eric Lowe is not just about music; it reflects the broader narrative of identity, friendship, and the transformative power of art in a diverse society. Their journey from high school misfits to respected musicians is a testament to the vibrant cultural tapestry that defines Vancouver.
