Max Webber Library in Blacktown Launches Dedicated Malayalam Section for Local Community
In the heart of Blacktown City, a vibrant suburb of Sydney, the Max Webber Public Library has recently unveiled a dedicated Malayalam section, marking a significant milestone for the local Malayali community. This initiative, launched on May 22, features an impressive collection of 450 titles spanning various genres, providing a cozy space for the community to engage with their cultural heritage. A smaller selection is also available at the Dennis Johnson Library, further enriching the resources accessible to the community. The establishment of this section is particularly meaningful for the Malayali expatriates, who have been part of Blacktown since the 1960s, primarily working in the IT and healthcare sectors. With an estimated population of around 2,500 Malayalis, this new addition to the library acknowledges their presence and contributions. Emie Roy, a project manager involved in the initiative, highlighted that Malayalam is now the 30th language represented in the library, joining a diverse array of languages that reflect the multicultural fabric of Blacktown, which is home to residents from nearly 180 countries. The inauguration event was a lively celebration of Kerala’s rich culture, featuring traditional performances, folk songs, and delicious Kerala snacks. Attended by around 130 community members, the event underscored the importance of preserving the Malayalam language and fostering a sense of belonging among the diaspora. Community members like Sandhya Ginni expressed hope that the library would serve as a bridge for younger generations to connect with their roots while allowing adults to revisit cherished literary works from their childhood. The library’s commitment to this initiative stems from the community’s ongoing demand for Malayalam literature. With potential for future expansions based on community interests, the library aims to support Malayali children in developing a strong connection to their mother tongue and culture, enriching the educational landscape of the region.
