Stoke-on-Trent to Retain City Status Amid Local Government Reorganisation, Officials Confirm
Stoke-on-Trent will retain its city status following a significant local government reorganization set to take place in 2028. This assurance comes from local council leaders who have confirmed that both Stoke-on-Trent and Newcastle-under-Lyme will maintain their respective statuses despite the planned abolition of the current ten local authorities in the area. Stoke-on-Trent was granted city status in 1925 by King George V, a milestone celebrated just last year, while Newcastle-under-Lyme has held borough status since 1173. Concerns had arisen among residents regarding the potential loss of city status, particularly in light of Rochester in Kent, which lost its city status in the 1990s during a similar reorganization. However, local officials have reassured the public that such an oversight will not occur in north Staffordshire. The strategy and resources scrutiny committee emphasized that city and borough statuses are deeply valued by the community, with Director of Governance James Doble highlighting their significance. To ensure the continuity of these statuses, plans are in place to establish charter trustee bodies. These bodies will consist of elected councillors from within the city and borough areas, who will convene annually to elect a mayor or lord mayor. Doble reiterated the importance of these titles, stating that they represent more than mere labels; they hold substantial meaning for the identity and pride of the local population. As the elections for the new unitary authorities approach in May, the transition will see the new councils take over the management of local services in 2028.
