Small Hurdles Remain for Stoke-on-Trent Mural Celebrating Clubbing Heritage
In Stoke-on-Trent, a vibrant project is underway to celebrate the city’s rich clubbing heritage through a mural. Former DJs Phil Johnson and Bob Leigh have successfully raised £11,000 to fund this artistic tribute, which aims to highlight the evolution of the local nightlife scene from the 1960s to the present day. The mural will be a significant 5 meters by 25 meters in size and is set to be installed at the Victoria Lounge bar in Hanley, a central location that resonates with the city’s musical history. Despite the enthusiasm surrounding the project, Johnson and Leigh acknowledge that they face a few "small hurdles" before the mural can come to fruition. One of the primary challenges is obtaining planning permission, as the town center is designated as a conservation area, which complicates the approval process. However, the duo remains optimistic and is eager to overcome these obstacles, believing that the mural will attract visitors and locals alike to appreciate Stoke-on-Trent's vibrant club culture. The community has shown tremendous support, with over 600 members in their Facebook group actively participating by nominating their favorite DJs and clubs to be featured in the mural. Notable figures in the local music scene, such as MC Ragga, who played a pivotal role in the early rave movement, are expected to be recognized. The selection process for which clubs and DJs will be included will be managed by an independent committee, ensuring a fair representation of Stoke-on-Trent's diverse musical landscape. As anticipation builds, Leigh has hinted at the possibility of a celebratory event upon the mural's completion, reflecting the community's eagerness to honor their shared history. This project not only aims to beautify the area but also to foster a sense of pride in Stoke-on-Trent's unique cultural heritage.
