Historic Grade II-listed building in Stoke-on-Trent reopens as pop-up exhibition space
In the heart of Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, a historic Grade II-listed building known as One Bethesda has recently reopened its doors after nearly two decades of closure. Originally serving as the home for the Staffordshire Potteries Water Board and later as a bar and restaurant, the building has now been transformed into a temporary exhibition space. This initiative is spearheaded by Re-Form Heritage, a charity dedicated to restoring heritage sites, which is also working on future plans for the site. The reopening of One Bethesda marks an exciting first step towards revitalizing the area. Re-Form Heritage's CEO, Andrew Emery, expressed the desire to reintroduce the community to this significant space, which has been dormant since 2008. The initial exhibitions will feature artwork created by students from Pinc College, an institution that focuses on providing creative educational programs for neurodivergent young people. This collaboration not only breathes new life into the building but also highlights the importance of community engagement and the arts. Rachel Newman, the chief impact and compliance officer for Pinc Education Group, shared her personal connection to the project, having grown up in Stoke-on-Trent. She emphasized the significance of utilizing local heritage to inspire young people, fostering hope and aspirations through artistic expression. The display of student artwork in One Bethesda represents a proud moment for both the college and the community, showcasing the talents of those who might otherwise be overlooked in traditional educational settings. As Re-Form Heritage continues its efforts to refurbish the adjacent Bethesda Chapel, which is set to become the anchor for Pinc College, the future looks promising for this part of Stoke-on-Trent. The initiative not only aims to preserve the historical essence of the buildings but also to create a vibrant cultural hub that nurtures creativity and community spirit.
