Hanley newsagent in Stoke-on-Trent closes after 50 years following theft incident

Turner's Newsagents, a beloved fixture in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, is set to close its doors after 50 years of service, marking the end of an era for the local community. Founded in January 1975 by June Turner, now 89, the shop became a cornerstone for residents, providing newspapers and groceries. The decision to close comes as a result of changing shopping habits and a decline in business that began during the Covid pandemic. Despite the challenges, June reflects fondly on her time running the shop, stating, "It's been marvellous," even as she prepares to say goodbye. The shop gained national attention in 2019 when June bravely defended herself against a would-be thief using her walking stick. This act of courage earned her a £250 High Sheriff's award, highlighting her resilience and commitment to her community. Her son, Alan Turner, who has been involved with the business since he was a paperboy at age 13, shares his mother's sentiment, reminiscing about the many memories created over the years. He humorously claims to be "the oldest newspaper boy in the country," showcasing the family’s deep roots in the community. The closure of Turner's Newsagents is also a reflection of broader changes in the area. Alan notes that the local landscape has shifted significantly since 2004, when many homes were demolished for a regeneration scheme. Although rebuilding efforts have begun, the community has not fully recovered, and shopping habits have evolved during this time. As the shop prepares to close, emotions run high among the family and loyal customers. James Turner, June's grandson, anticipates feeling nostalgic as the shutters come down for the last time. Customers like Barry Clunn express their gratitude for June's outstanding service, underscoring the deep connections formed over the years. The closure of Turner's Newsagents signifies not just the end of a business, but the loss of a cherished community hub.
