Demolition Approved for Fire-Damaged Twyford Factory in Stoke-on-Trent
The Old Twyford Buildings in Etruria, Stoke-on-Trent, are set to be demolished following a fire that ravaged the site over a decade ago. The derelict factory buildings, located on Garner Street, have been a significant concern for local authorities and residents alike. Recently, WS Storage Solutions Limited received permission to proceed with the demolition, marking a crucial step in revitalizing the area. This site is part of the Ceramic Valley Enterprise Zone, where efforts are underway to enhance infrastructure and rehabilitate brownfield land for future development. Jo Gideon, the former MP for Stoke-on-Trent Central, highlighted the environmental challenges posed by the Old Twyford Buildings during her tenure. She described the situation as a "perfect storm" due to the site’s proximity to major transport routes, including the A500 and the West Coast Mainline, as well as the River Trent. At one point, the Environment Agency identified the site as one of the top three environmental risks in the country, underscoring the urgency of addressing the dereliction. The history of the Twyford factory dates back to its operational days, with production ceasing in 1990 as manufacturing shifted to the Alsager factory. Despite its closure, parts of the building remained in use until 2004, with the site filled with industrial materials until 2022. The demolition of these buildings not only represents a significant environmental remediation effort but also opens the door for potential redevelopment, which could breathe new life into the surrounding community. As Stoke-on-Trent continues to evolve, the demolition of the Old Twyford Buildings is a hopeful sign of progress.
